Metro Golf Magazines began in 1991 as Metrolina Golf Magazine, serving the Greater Charlotte (N.C.) area, as the brainchild of Gil Capps, who in 1998 sold the publication to current owner/publisher/CEO Reid Spencer. Metrolina Golf Magazine existed as a print publication until 2011, when the magazine began a lengthy and detailed conversion to the digital platform that exists today at www.metrogolfmag.com . Not only does the Metro Golf Magazines website uphold the mission of the original print product—as the No. 1 source for golf information in the Charlotte region—but the reach and the readership of the digital presence has expanded exponentially to include local, regional, national and international news and features.
A graduate of Yale University with a degree in Drama, Spencer began his career as a sportswriter at The Charlotte Observer and has written for more than 100 different publications and news services throughout the years, including The Associated Press, The Sporting News, Baltimore Sun, Seattle Times, New York Post, Chicago Tribune, Milwaukee Journal, TV Guide and Parade Magazine. Spencer is the author of the award-winning 50 Greatest Golfers: A Celebration of the All-Time Best, published in 2003 by The Sporting News. He has also authored two books on NASCAR racing. He is a member of the Golf Writers Association of America, the Golf Travel Writers of America, a former president of the Carolinas Golf Reporters Association and the recipient of numerous awards for his writings. Through Spencer’s vision, the digital platform of Metro Golf Magazines has grown from a small, regional publication to the widespread internet presence it enjoys today.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina’s School of Journalism, Nelson has won multiple writing awards from various professional organizations, including the North Carolina Press Association. His byline has appeared in regional, national and international magazines, as well as several special event publications, including Ryder Cup and USGA championship programs. Since 1988, he has operated Reid Nelson Promotions, LLC, a Charleston, S.C.-based public relations firm representing golf-oriented properties, both public and private. During that time, he has worked with virtually every renowned architect in golf and has represented more than a dozen client courses ranked in America’s “Top 100″ by various publications. Nelson is widely recognized as one of the most knowledgeable and respected experts in the realms of both golf course architecture and golf equipment, and his writings on those subjects are staples of the Metro Golf Magazines web site. Nelson is a member of Bulls Bay Golf Club near Charleston, where he maintains a single-digit handicap that he actually plays to ... occasionally.
