Kelly Chinn matches scoring record as medalist in U.S. Junior Amateur

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. -- It’s almost impossible for Kelly Chinn to exceed expectations.

After all, the Duke-bound 18-year-old from Great Falls, Va., resides at the top of the junior golf pyramid. He’s ranked first among juniors and 49th among amateurs of all ages, having partnered with David Ford to earn medalist honors at this year’s U.S. Amateur Four-Ball before losing in the quarterfinals.

He’s a former Class 6A state champion. He was 2020 Rolex Junior Player of the Year and a Rolex Junior All-American the Year before.

So when Chinn shot 64-68—132, matching the event’s 36-hole scoring record, to top the leaderboard in stroke play at the 73rd U.S. Junior Amateur at the Country Club of North Carolina, no one was surprised. His 64 on the Dogwood Course at CCNC was a competitive record, matched on Tuesday by Andrew Goodman, who followed an even-par round on the Cardinal Course with the record-tying 8-under-par score.

Goodman’s 135 total was closest to Chinn’s 132 after two rounds. Those two golfers will be the top two seeds when the match-play portion of the championship begins with the Round of 64 on Wednesday. All matches will be played on the Dogwood Course.

Medalist in the U.S. Junior Amateur is a familiar position to Chinn, who achieved the same distinction at age 15 in the 2018 edition of the championship at Baltusrol. But this year is different.

“Obviously, three years ago, I wasn’t at the top of junior golf,” Chinn said after his 3-under 68 on Tuesday. “It was a little bit surprising to be up there. Obviously, being one of the high-ranked juniors, I feel like this is where I’m supposed to be—at least around the top of the leaderboard.

“So it’s definitely a different feel, but at the end of the day, the accomplishments still stand out.”

Chinn advanced to the Round of 32 in 2018. In 2019 he was a semifinalist in the Junior Am. In 2020, the event was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Accordingly, this is Chinn’s last chance at the title before he starts his college career at Duke, but he isn’t allowing himself to think past Wednesday’s match. Only one problem: he won’t know his opponent until Wednesday morning.

A 7 a.m., 13 players tied at 4 over par after two rounds of stroke play will begin a playoff for the remaining 10 spots in the 64-player match-play field.

“Just win tomorrow—I think that’s all I’ve got to think about,” Chinn said. “I don’t want to think about, in five days, what will happen or whatever. Just keep myself in the present. My only goal right now is to win tomorrow, so I’ll just focus on that.”

CCNC member Jackson Van Paris shot 72-70—142 to earn the 17th seed. He’ll play 48th-seeded Spencer Turtz of Charlotte at 8:24 a.m. Wednesday. If both Van Paris and Chinn win two matches, they’ll met in the Round of 16—and that would constitute a battle between two friends.

Through Van Paris, Chinn got an advance look at CCNC.

“We’ve obviously played in the same tournaments, so I’ve been able to see him and get to know him a lot over the years,” Chinn said. “And it’s been awesome to be able to play this course with him. Obviously, having this as his home course, he knows this course, so it’s cool to pick his brain when I’m playing with him.”

Ford, Chinn’s U.S. Amateur Four-Ball partner, shot 69 Tuesday on the Dogwood Course to tie for third in stroke play with Nicholas Dunlap at 7-under 136. Maxwell Ford, David’s twin brother, joined Rylan Shim and N.C. State-bound Caleb Surratt of Indian Trail, N.C. at 6-under 137.

Notes: John Daly II, son of two-time major winner John Daly missed the playoff by one shot after a second-round 75… 12-year-old Davis Wotnosky, the second youngest golfer ever to play in the championship, suffered a late double bogey, finished with a 75 and missed the Playoff by two strokes at 6 over par. “It’s an achievement to be here as the second-youngest,” Wotnosky said after the round. “Hopefully it makes me stronger. It’s not how you fall—it’s how you get back up.”
