CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (April 30, 2019) -- Defending a title is never easy. Pulling off a three-peat is something only the best can accomplish, but that’s what Pat Brogden of Garner did in the 16th North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship on Tuesday.
Brogden shot 74 in the in the final round at Chapel Hill Country Club to post a 6-over-par 150 total for two rounds, good for a three-shot victory over first-round leader Patty Moore of Pinehurst.
The win was Brogden’s third straight in the event and her sixth N.C. Senior Women’s Amateur title overall.
“It's hard to put into words,” Brogden said. “It's not something I ever expected I would accomplish. It means you've played some pretty good golf for a good period of time to do it six times. I'm extremely proud.”
Moore began the day with a two-shot lead, but it was tied at the top after a two-shot swing on the first hole when Brogden birdied and Moore made bogey.
Brogden didn’t capture the lead until the par-4 13th hole but never gave it up after that. She capped off the victory with a 12-foot birdie putt on the final green.
“I'm always working on my short game and putting,” Brogden said. “That really saved me today and has throughout my career.
“You know when Patty's in the field and you’ve defeated her at the end of the day you've defeated the best champion we've ever had,” Brogden said after the win.
All told, Brogden has 14 Carolinas Golf Association titles to Moore’s 19.
Kim Briele of New Bern finished third at 13-over-par 157.
Kelly Whitley of Greenboro won the N.C. Senior Women’s Amateur’s Carolinas Division with 16-over-par 160 total for the two rounds.
Therese St. Peter of Pittsboro finished as the low Super Senior in the Carolinas Division of the championship with a 160 total.
