USGA Announces Qualifying Sites for U.S. Junior Amateur

LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.  – The United States Golf Association (USGA) announced on Monday the qualifying sites for the 73rd U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, to be conducted at The Country Club of North Carolina July 19-24. CCNC is hosting its third USGA championship.

Conducted over 18 holes, qualifying will be held at 59 sites across the United States between June 2 and July 1. Online entry applications will begin today and continue through Wednesday, May 26, at 5 p.m. EDT (usga.org/champs/apply). In 2020, the U.S. Junior Amateur was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Allied Golf Associations provide the makeup for a process that allows thousands of young golfers the chance to compete in U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying and to eventually earn a place in this international field at CCNC,” said Greg Sanfilippo, director of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship for the USGA. “The U.S. Junior Amateur, which has been conducted since 1948, has a longstanding history of excellence and with the current field expansion continues to provide more opportunities for world’s best to compete at the highest level in junior golf.”

USGA championships have been hosted at five of the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying sites. Fargo (N.D.) Country Club, the site of the 1995 Junior Amateur (won by D. Scott Hailes), will host qualifying on June 21. Stanford (Calif.) University Golf Course, the host of the 1959 championship (won by Larry J. Lee), will be a site on June 28.

Steve Stricker won the 2019 U.S. Senior Open at The Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame, in South Bend, Ind., and the course will be a Junior Amateur qualifying site on June 18. Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course, in Norman, Okla., and Country Club of Birmingham (Ala.) will host on June 15 and June 30, respectively. Each course has hosted two USGA championships.

California has the most qualifying sites with six, while North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania and Texas each have three. There are qualifying sites in 40 states.

The Tar Heel State’s qualifying sites include Ironwood Golf and Country Club, in Greenville, on June 14; Country Club of Salisbury on June 16; and Forest Creek Golf Club (North Course), in Pinehurst, on June 28. The C.C. of Salisbury has held 23 Carolinas Golf Association championships, including two North Carolina Amateurs (1966, 1990). In South Carolina, The Golf Club at Briar’s Creek, was the site of the 2017 Carolinas Amateur and will host qualifying on June 14.

Aligning with ongoing USGA initiatives to expand support of junior golf, the field size for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will increase from 156 players to 264, beginning with the 2021 championship at CCNC. The Dogwood Course will host both match play and stroke play, while the Cardinal Course will serve as the stroke play co-host course.

The U.S. Junior Amateur is open to amateurs who have not reached their 19th birthday by the conclusion of the championship and who have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.4. Tiger Woods (three times), Jordan Spieth (twice), Johnny Miller, David Duval, Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris are among the notable U.S. Junior Amateur champions.
